[An unedited, candid recount of a morning discussion between myself, Kevin Miller, and Dr. James]

In church this past Sunday the pastor was reading from Hebrews and recounted the “law” of the time as “providing a framework to the believers for right and wrong, good and bad,” and in my paraphrasing, healthy and unhealthy.

It struck me that this is our endeavor with Functional Medicine and the overarching platform of becoming “weller”. We are all seeking our personal framework that will lead to us to being as well as possible. As infinitely complex as this can be due to our specific history, circumstances and more, let’s attempt to simplify the framework.

Functional Medicine focuses on four areas which you can think of as the corners that hold up the personal foundation of your “house”. You’ll often hear Dr. James quip about:

  1. Eat
  2. Sleep
  3. Exercise
  4. Mind/Body

During a recent, long plane flight, we expanded on these area to showcase the following – this is a rough draft, you are the first to see!:

1. Intake

  • Mouth – Taste and Food
  • Eyes – Sight
  • Ears – Sound
  • Skin
  • Rotation – cycling our food, not having the same thing every day and every season
  • Chewing – chewing enough
  • Life Giving & Taking Foods

2. Movement

  • Exercise
  • Posture
  • Sleep posture
  • Work posture – sitting all day?
  • Breathing

3. Rest

  • Sabbath
  • Sleep Efficiency
  • Siesta Factor – taking breaks throughout the day
  • Sabbatical & Vacation

4. Mind/Body/Soul Care & Engagement

  • Relationships
  • Community
  • Work
  • Stress Enhancement
  • Rhythm
  • Heart Math
  • Spirituality
  • Mind Wiring

Granted, it is a lot to think about in every area, but if you simply look at the main, four areas and know your chance at being as well as possible will come from having an intentional, proactive, daily plan for every area. A deficit in any area compromises the foundation of your life. A higher deficit in one area can make your foundation slip and the entire foundation will be off kilter.

The latter is where many of us fall. We are doing SO MANY things right! Yet still having problems and symptoms because one corner of our foundation is suffering and causing problems all over the place.

So, what should you do? We would encourage you to write down each area and what you are intentionally doing to support, grow and sustain yourself. Chances are near 100% you will realize some areas you are not giving due diligence to.
